La Junta won big over Burlington 17-2 on Thursday.
La Junta got on the board in the top of the first inning after Livia Smith grounded out, Marlie Gonzales walked, and Ayanna Torrez walked, each scoring one run.
La Junta added to their early lead in the top of the second inning when an error scored two runs, Ryanna Pineda was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Torrez hit into a double play, but one run scored.
La Junta scored six runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Madalyn Tafoya drew a walk, scoring one run, Smith singled, scoring one run, Isabelle Aragon doubled, scoring two runs, Gonzales doubled, scoring one run, and Ramie Gonzales grounded out, scoring one run.
Smith earned the win for La Junta. The hurler allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out two and walking two. Paige Bessire took the loss for Burlington. The starting pitcher went four innings, giving up 16 runs (eight earned) on five hits, striking out one and walking 13.
Smith and Aragon were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for La Junta. Aragon led La Junta with two hits in two at bats. Torrez paced La Junta with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, tallying 14 walks for the game. Natalya Herrera, Gonzales, and Yliani Garcia each stole multiple bases for La Junta. La Junta stole 13 bases in the game.
Karyme Ramos led Burlington with one run batted in. Bessire led Burlington with two hits in two at bats from the leadoff position. Burlington turned one double play in the game.
